That was exciting!
Now, on to more teacher-y stuff! I posted earlier about Making Mental Images with my class. I can't believe how into this they got! The lesson was all about using our senses to make mental images. This book is great for this activity. It's called Night Sounds, Morning Colors and it is by Rosemary Wells. I started by covering up the cover so that they kiddos couldn't see it. Then, we reviewed what our five senses are. I read one page (the kiddos closed their eyes to better faciliate making a mental image) and we filled in this chart as a class.
Then, I read them the next page and we discussed our mental images with a partner.
The next day we reviewed and did another page out of the book together using the chart. (I used sticky notes to make changing our thinking easier!)
Then, I let them work on making mental images using the five senses with a partner. After reading yet another page and discussing one last time, I let them go to work on it with a book that they were reading with their reading partner. Here is the form that they used! Of course, you can get yours HERE!
After all of the modeling and practicing, my kiddos did really well with this! They really got into using all of their senses! Then of course I had to read them the whole book and show them the pictures! They were amazed at home different the illustrations were from their mental images. The kiddos agreed that their mental images were better than the illustrations!
